Let’s face it: believing in yourself is hard work. It’s much easier to slip into autopilot and allow well-worn limiting beliefs to dictate how we see the world and our own place in it. But by doing so, we miss out on all the amazing opportunities that life has to offer. There are so many brilliant people who have succeeded in overcoming their fears and obstacles through self-belief and YOU can be one of them too. Here are some tips that can help you challenge your own limiting beliefs and begin to see things differently.
Be aware of your own limiting beliefs
Before you even begin to challenge your limiting beliefs, you need to be aware of what they are. It’s so easy to let our fears and worries dictate our actions. But by being aware of your own limiting beliefs, you can catch yourself as you do so. This way, you can look at the belief and challenge it, ridding yourself of the negative thoughts and emotions they cause. You can do this by writing down your limiting beliefs – the ones that are most relevant to you right now. From there, you can begin to trace back to where they began and why they started. This is a process that may take time, but it will be well worth it when you’re able to really shake off those pesky negative thoughts.
Ask yourself: what do you want?
This may seem like a strange one, but it’s an effective way to challenge your own limiting beliefs. Think about your dreams, passions and ambitions. What do you want from life? Why are you doing what you’re doing? What would you do if you weren’t afraid? From there, you can look at your limiting beliefs and find ways to disprove each one. You’re too young to pursue that, you don’t have the right qualifications, you don’t have enough experience, etc. Challenge each one of these beliefs, one by one. You can do this with help from others, or by working through it on your own. It may take time, but if you truly want something, you’ll find a way.
Find role models and mentors
Finding role models and mentors who inspire you is a great way to challenge your own limiting beliefs. Why do you admire this particular person? What qualities do they have that you lack? What can you learn from them? Role models and mentors can help you identify the things that are holding you back and give you the tools to move past them. Additionally, if you’re struggling with a particular issue, such as a lack of confidence, having someone you look up to and admire can really help you move past that issue. Finding the right person, or people, to look up to can be a daunting task, but finding them can change your life.
Write a list of your own strengths and qualities
You may wonder why but writing a list of your own strengths and qualities is a great way to challenge limiting beliefs. Think about your skills and qualities that you’re proud of. What are you good at? What do you enjoy? What are you passionate about? What do people compliment you on? What makes you unique? What do you wish other people knew about you? Keep looking at this list and every time you find a limiting belief creeping up on you, you have the proof in black and white that it isn't true!
Truly notice when you’re holding yourself back
If you’re holding yourself back, you’ll know. You’ll be aware of the signs that indicate you’re not reaching your full potential. You’ll be aware of the excuses that you constantly make, the fears that hold you back and the limiting beliefs that you’re holding on to. Rather than dismissing those thoughts, take note of your self-limiting tendencies instead, and work on challenging them as soon as you become aware of them.
Try something new or different
You don’t have to confront all your fears at once. Instead, try to challenge your limiting beliefs by finding ways to try something new or different. It can be anything: it could be a new hobby, joining an activity, learning a new skill or making new friends. Change up your routine and challenge your beliefs along the way. It may seem like these changes don’t have anything to do with your limiting beliefs, but they can actually help you overcome them. Challenges that you face outside of your comfort zone can help you discover new things about yourself, break out of your comfort zone, and begin to see things differently. Challenges may seem scary, but they can really help you grow and overcome your own limitations.
Don't forget...
Believing in yourself is an important part of success and you've got this, so why not reach for the stars!
